Every year in
this period, since at least 1709 (but there are traces back to the 5th
century) in the remote Faroe Islands, the little Danish archipelago
between Great Britain and Iceland, you could see the horrible massacre
of hundreds of Pilot Whales, a species part of the oceanic dolphin
family (Delphinidae) although their behavior is closer to that of the
larger whales. This is a very uncommon and cruel kind of fishing
because the fishermen don't hunt the whales in the sea, they just wait
for them on land and when the whales approach the coasts pushed by the
hunger they surround and slaughter them with axes and hooks. The
environmentalist association Sea Shepherd have raised the alarm and
distributed this shocking pictures.
